If you had a garden pest like a gopher would you try to get rid of it yourself or hire a...?

My cousin's husband is trying to get rid of gopher by trying to drown it with the garden hose .I think he saw Caddyshack too many times and his wife already told him that is not going to work and it is wasting water and I told him to let the neighborhood cat killed it which I don't know if it is feral or somebody's pet but she has already killed two gophers that we had popping up in our yard and she is a pretty good hunter.
We found, a couple of houses ago, a trick a friend told us about that works. Put an automobile flare down the gopher hold. Light it and plug up the hole. It will fumigate the entire den and the gophers will find another yard to tunnel in. The smell must stay awhile because we never had gopher problems again!
Also, plant daffodils, any kind of allum, onions, garlic -- gophers hate them.
