Pest Deterrent

Are there any pet safe pest deterrents?

I've scrubbed my house top to bottom and I can't seem to get rid of everything.
I've put down talcum powder for the ants. While it helps, it doesn't seem to stop the fire ants.
And earlier I walked into the kitchen just to be met by a gigantic beetle in the floor and a couple of spiders falling down into my face.

With the area I live in, I'm not only afraid of the creepy crawlies sneaking in through the cracks. I've already seen a dozen or so reports of rattlesnakes in homes, I've seen scorpions in our old houses, and I've been so unlucky as to find a brown recluse lurking the neighborhood.
I have dogs outside and one that has taken a few rattler bites and I'm afraid another one might do her in.

Is there anything I can use inside and out to repel general house pests as well as scorpions/snakes/spiders outside?

A few suggestions to keep pests out.
--Screens
--Weatherstrip doors
--Spray expanding foam into all crevices around the foundation/sill.

Outside? Not too sure, I think there are chemicals, wet or dry (pellets), that you can spray/sprinkle around the house to deter them.

I believe some company makes an ultra-sonic device, that will keep them away, but it could affect the dog also.

Good Luck
