How To Get Dogs To Stay Out Of Your Garden
Dogs are normally not thought of pests that need to be controlled, but realistically they can cause just as much damage or more damage to your garden than traditional garden pests. Dogs like the soft, dark soil to dig in, bury things in, and to deposit into. They can also trample your plants especially when they are young and growing. This is not good for your vegetables, greens, or flowers.
If you have a fence, identify how the dog is getting into your yard. If it's from a neighbor, let the neighbor know what's going on and ask them to keep their dog out of your property as best as possible. Normally the dog will dig under the fence. Generally speaking using larger rocks on each side of the fence will help keep the dog from getting into your yard as it will be more difficult to get through. If the dog is kept out, your garden is safe
There are some practical ways of repelling dogs to keep them away from the garden that you should consider using.
Use cayenne pepper or another strong hot spicy scent around your garden. Dogs typically do not like this at all. This helps with a variety of other pests away from your plants as well.
Another technique that you can use is to sprinkle some black pepper around the border of the garden.
One product to consider using against dogs in your yard are the motion activated sprinklers. These will only shoot a spray of water if an animal crosses the motion sensor. It will scare them as opposed to hurting the dog. Point this device at your garden so that when a dog or other larger animal get near the garden, they will be scared away.
If the same dog is always in your yard and messing up your garden, just call animal control. If the dog is owned by someone, it will send them a message to keep their dog or dogs from randomly roaming the neighborhood.
