1. Coming from the insect family Formicidae and belonging to the order Hymenoptera. Ants have evolved from wasp-like ancestors between 110 and 130 million years ago.




2. Ants orginally began farming about 50 million years before humans. The earliest evidence suggests ants started using agriculture as early as 70 million years ago in the early Tertiary period.




3. There are said to be a total of 22,000 species that have been classified so far.




4. They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae and a quite unique and distinctive node-like structure that forms a slender waist.




5. Ants tend to form colonies that do range in size. The larger of these colonies mainly consist of sterile wingless females forming castes of "workers".




6. These ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens" and The colonies are sometimes described as super organisms because these ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the Colony.




7. Ants use sophisticated horticultural techniques to enhance their crop yields. They secrete chemicals with antibiotic properties to inhibit mold growth, and devised fertilization protocols using manure.




8. The ant is the animal with the largest brain that is in proportion to its size. They have about 250,000 brain cells.




9. The only places that lack indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands but other than that they can be found in all lands.




10. They tend to thrive in most ecosystems, and may form 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass.




11. The success of ants in so many environments has been put down to their organization and ability to adapt to habitats, make the most of resources, and defend themselves from enemies.




12. Societies of ants tend to divide labor and communication between individuals as well as the ability to solve complex problems.




13. Ants have been used by many human cultures in rituals, medication and cuisine.




14. Ant's ability to exploit resources brings them into conflict with humans, as with this they often invade buildings and can damage crops.




15. Ant extermination methods include using bait traps, using baby powder, laying down poison, wheat based products, and pouring boiling water on them.
