Tomato Plant Pests

What type of tomato pest is this?

I am doing a research project in my Biology class, and my topic was "How do different fertilizers affect the growth of tomato plants?" My data was inconclusive because in order to get sunlight during the winter without a greenhouse, I put the pots by an open window during the day. They somehow got some type of bug in them. It's very small, only a couple of centimeters big. It is gray/black and ate the stalk of the seedlings at the base next to the soil. Does anyone know what type of pest this could be?

It sounds like you had some bugs in the soil when you potted up your plants.
I can't really tell what you have for sure from the description, but from the sound of the damage it may be cutworms.
These are the larval stage of an insect that has likely hatched out because it was in a warmer environment. Cutworms often "girdle" plants, killing them by chomping all the way around the tender shoots/stems.
To avoid this problem in greenhouses, there are soil drenches that commercial gowers use that kill off unwanted creatures and they often sterilize the soil as well.
