Mice Extermination

Rat extermination....HELP?

We found a small rat (mouse?) in our basement. I didn't see it, but we are generally not fond of animals and we really want to make sure there is NO other one left.

Are there agencies that remove rats? Does government provide any cheap or free services? How much do they generally charge? What happens if we use rat poison? Would they rot and then stink?

ANY IDEAS?

Btw, we would rather pay than do it ourselves.

We live in Canada. No US agencies.
