Rat Deterrent

Snake relocation question. Expert opinions would be appreciated.?

We have a black rat snake ( about 3 foot long) living under our front porch. For the last few days, it has been laying right in front of our front door ( not a pleasant thing to find at 5:30 when you come out to get the morning paper.) It tries repeatedly to go in the garage - where I am sure it has been before to get mice. Here is the question. This evening we were able to get it into a trash can and "relocate" it about 100 yards away in a wooded area. Will it come back to its "territory"? If so - what are some other non-harmful deterrents? We do not want to kill or harm it in any way- I'm just really tired of being surprised by it so near the house..

You may not have moved it far enough away, I once relocated
a king snake for a friend (which he should have just left in his
corn patch, it was doing a good job). We moved it at least a
half mile away, and it returned. You really ought to have
learned to live with the snake, it'll never attack you and it
is an implacable devourer of pest rodents.
