Stop my son's bleeding nose!?
Please help me. My son's nose won't stop bleeding. I caught him chewing on a piece of rat bait. I don't know what's in that stuff, I dug up the box but it doesn't say what's in it. How can I get his nose to stop bleeding?
I want to take him to the doctor but I can't. I'm afraid he might get us in trouble by lying to the doctor and saying that we hit him.
My wife is a decent woman and would never hit our son. I won't risk that humiliation for her sake.
Hello,
You don't say how long ago he was chewing on the rat bait. A very common rat bait is called 'warfarin,' which is an anti-blood clotting drug, - - it prevents the rat's blood from clotting, and then the rat bleeds to death internally.
But warfarin takes 2 to 3 days to work in humans, - - if he has only just eaten warfarin, that is too soon for it to have taken effect.
However, if there is any doubt about it, he needs a 'Vitamin K' injection urgently, to reverse the abnormal bleeding tendency caused by warfarin.
Rest and reassurance, and a large pad under his nose, may help, but whatever is causing the bleeding it needs medical advice urgently if it won't stop. Bad signs would be a very fast pulse rate, or if he is cold and clammy and pale.
I hope this is of some help.
Best wishes,
