Everything You Need to Know About a Verandah

Have you ever found yourself peering out your window, wishing you could be outside when it was raining? Maybe you wanted to experience the little droplets falling into your garden like little shimmers of silver, only to turn clear as they touch the foliage. Or maybe you love the smell of the earth and the coolness that rain brings on a scorching hot summer day. No matter what it is, we've all been there, aching to escape the confines of our homes.

A verandah is one quick way that you can get outside but stay dry during a rainstorm. Not to mention that they are beautiful, worth-while additions to any home.

First of all, you need to know that there are many types of verandahs. There are verandahs that are raised. There are also verandahs that are located on the sides of houses and some located in the middle of a yard. You can also buy some that are partially enclosed and allow you to keep warm during the winter or fall. With this in mind, before you choose to build one, you need to decide what precisely you are looking for. Until you know that, you shouldn't start building.

The second thing is your options. You can go the easy route and hire a contractor, but contractors can be unreliable or could be scammers. If you find a reputable one, by all means, use them. If not, you may want to try the do it yourself route.

However, doing it yourself can prove difficult. It's all a matter of what experience you have and whether or not you are architecturally inclined. If you are not, then you may find it much easier to look into buying a kit.

Kits can be found online. They not only provide you with all of the materials, but they also give you clear instructions and pre-measured pieces.

Keep in mind that you have a lot of choices in kits. You can buy kits for glass verandahs, which have glass roofs. They allow you to see the sky if you decide to lie down underneath them. They are also great if you like watching rain hit a window.

There are also a few that are made out of composite decking materials. These should not be exposed to things such as cleaning materials—they can cause them to decompose or other things of that nature.

Keep in mind that you will need to take care of your verandah. For example, if you have a wood verandah, you will need to make sure it is properly sealed and also that it has not been infested by termites or other bugs that may compromise the structure.

Glass ones may be easier to take care of, but they do need to be cared for. Keep in mind that glass heats up when exposed to heat and sunlight is no exception. While this may keep you warm during colder months, it can be potentially dangerous during others.

Once you have decided what you want and have figured out how you are going to build it, good luck!
