Insect pest identification question.?

Can you identify this insect:
*Smaller than a fingertip; could fit on the inside of one's fingernail.
*Looks completely black at first, but if looked at closely has a dimondish pattern on its back with faint traces of yellow.
*Moves very slow.
*Cannot fly as far as I know.
*Seems common and can be found in California.
If you know, please answer. No stupid answers please. Thank you!

if by chance it is shaped like a lady bug, just a lot smaller it is probably a varied carpet beetle, possibly a furniture beetle, though everyone's idea of small is different, so posting a picture would be the surest way to ID it for you.
