More Ways to Control Grasshoppers

Looking for ways to control grasshoppers without chemicals? There's multiple ways to control them, today I'm going to talk about floating row covers and a trap crop in the form of a patch of tall grass near your garden.

Ways to control grasshoppers

1. Floating row covers. These are a lightweight fabric that lets enough light through to let your plants keep growing. They're often placed over plants early in the season to protect from frost. They won't protect from a hard freeze, yet they can still add several weeks to the growing season when used in both spring and fall.

For controlling grasshoppers they can act as a physical barriers to keep most insects out. Set up some hoops over your garden bed or use stakes around the border to keep the row cover from touching the leaves of the plants, if it is touching the leaves of the plants some insects, including grasshoppers, will chew through the row cover to get to the plants.

2. A patch of tall grass as a trap crop. Grasshoppers from babies to adults would prefer to live in tall grass rather than your garden.

If you maintain a patch near your garden the grasshoppers will naturally be attracted to it. Many grasshopper predators also prefer to live in tall grass. This is especially easy in the wetter climates where grass grows everywhere. The western climates will require some irrigation the keep the grass patch green, it's well worth the water to keep them away from your garden though.

That was only two ways to control grasshoppers in your garden, based around keeping them out. Pests that don't get to your garden plants can't cause problems.
