organic pesticide for my heirloom tomatoes?
I have a lovely assortment of organic heirloom tomatoes sprouted this year and intend to keep them organic. I've noticed that they are being eaten quite vigorously. I need help! any organic pesticide recipes available. a diluted soap such as doctor bronner's or something, i've heard of cayenne as well? Thanks!
First see what is eating the tomatoes. I suspect if large amounts of the plants are missing each day you have horn worms which are not effected by soap or neem.
Horn worms are large green caterpillars with either a red or black horn on their butt. They can devour about 1/5 of a large tomato plant over night and will also nosh on the fruits. Bt will work on the horn worms when they young but not after they get over a centimetre. Hand picking is the best way to deal with them but that is tricky as they are beautifully camouflaged. Do this either early in the morning or in the evening when they get active (or cool over casts days). if you see what looks like grains of rice on their backs leave them alone as this means they have parasitized by a parasitic wasp and will soon die (and no longer will be eating your plants).
Remember, with organics, unlike using chemicals there is not one size fits all pesticides and you must know what you are trying to kill before using anything. Also remember any pesticide will usually kill beneficial insects along with the pests and in a well balanced organic garden the beneficial insects will do as good or better job that any pesticide. the rub is there has to be a population of pests on the crops before the beneficials will show up to do their job so at times the p;ants will look less than perfect but still produce amply.
