Caffè Gilli - Firenze

The Caffè Gilli is a shop of Florence, located in Piazza della Repubblica. The presence of Caffè Pasticceria  Gilli in Florence dating back to at least 1733. It appeared that date engraved on the facade of a building  located in via Calzaiuoli, presumably the original site of the first Caffè Gilli, now occupied by a self-service  pizzeria. Some pictures testify to the presence of a pastry Gilli in Piazza della Repubblica in the corner of  Via degli Speziali at the end of the last century. The transfer of the Caffè Gilli to its present location took 
place in the twenties, as also reflected in the windows and furniture, perfectly preserved, which are now the  only example of Belle Epoque café remained in Florence. Even this cafe, like others in the Republic Square was  attended by writers and artists, but unlike others here were more rare outbursts and confusion, because the most  fiery spirits were kept more under control. After the Second World War the place was frequented by young people  penniless who often stopped at the corner outside of it. Here was taken the famous photograph  by Ruth Orkin  named "American Girl in Italy 1951" that represents the time: a beautiful American girl who goes on the sidewalk  outside the bar and attracts the attentions of a whole group of young men. As it was said that those who lived by their wits had many "nails", that is debt, the bar was known as Bar of fakirs, as were many of his customers 
to "live on the nails." Today, however, the Gilli coffee is one of the most exclusive in the city, especially at  the tables, served by waiters.
